20 PAGE OIL COOLER BIBLE IN THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE OF DRIFT TENGOKU!!!

.:.Translated for underprivelaged Gaijins by the good folks at MAX USA.:.

There is 2 different types
A: Trust, HKS, Earls, MAX - These are cost effective and cools just as much as the other type.
B: Side tank type HPI, ARC, Blitz - Expensive and heavy but good design for vehicle specific kit because it can be made any size.
DT says there is no exact way to tell a performance difference.

Oil cooling is a unity of pressure and volume.
As the temp goes up the pressure drops, and if the temp is too cold, it is hard for components to move through the oil effeciently.
Optimal operating temp is 80-90 degrees C.
Oil can stand 120-130 degrees C but its not good for the engine so be sure to keep it below 100C.

Most oil coolers drop pressure less than 1KG/CM. So even if you want 2 coolers the typical drop is still reasonable, but if your car has a worn out oil pump giving it additional pressure drop will cancel out the benefits of the cooler. If the drop is over 1KG/CM consider getting an external oil pump like many race cars. Advanced systems integrate a thermostat so it does not get too cold. But kits like these from HKS, HPI, Blitz are $1100.

One trick if you ever run too cool (never a concern for temprate climates) is to put tape over a portion of the cooler. On the other hand if you are still not cool enough, you should run proper ducting to maximize air flow to the cooler. You can also spray water on it which may reduce temp -10 degrees C after 1 lap. Yanack and Speed Master make a heat disapating compound you can spray on your oil cooler, radiator and intercooler too. Longer lines also help volume and cooling.

Myth overruled: It really does not matter how you orient the cooler, up and down, on its side, at an angle, as long as it gets air.

Tip: always carry a hose coupler in case the cooler gets smashed.

By the way, the MAX cooler is only $60
